Puppies and Kittens
Getting ready for your first visit? We look forward to meeting you and the newest member of your family! Please bring your cat in a carrier or your dog on a leash. If you know your pet is aggressive, please notify our staff prior to your appointment and special arrangements will be made. There is no need to be anxious about the visit. If you remain calm so will your pet. Remember that animals "pick up on your emotions" and will change their behavior. Your pet is in great hands with our well trained staff. They will make your pet feel at home and provide them with compassionate veterinary care. If you've adopted a pet from the Maui Humane Society, please bring in your free examination certificate to receive your FREE EXAM.
Here's what to expect. During the visit we will go over the medical history of your pet and discuss any concerns you might have. Once we have established a health profile we will examine your pet, test for parasites, and vaccinate him or her. We will also explain how to properly care for your kitten or puppy. We'll address topics like: grooming, socialization, litter box or crate training, troubleshooting bad behavior, pet safety, spaying/neutering and prevention of parasites.
Unfortunately accidents happen and bones break. That's why we are prepared with everything we need to perform fracture repairs and orthopedic platings. Bone plating is a frequently utilized, sophisticated form of treatment for many types of fractures.
Dental care is a very important part of pet health care. Besides the obvious bad breath and tooth loss, research has shown untreated dental problems result in heart, liver, and kidney disease. To combat this problem, our doctors offer many levels of treatment. Prescription diets, tooth brushing, and enzymatic chews for dogs are just the beginning.
A thorough dental care program encourages routine tartar removal, cleaning and polishing of the teeth under general anesthesia. Trained technicians complete these procedures under the veterinarian's supervision. While under anesthesia, your pet's teeth, gums and mouth can be examined without stress or danger.
Integrative Medicine with Dr. Curtis Willauer
Human health care has broadened to include holistic principles borrowed from other cultures. Why not share these benefits with your pets? We offer the unique services of Dr. Curtis Willauer, who applies his knowledge of Chinese Medicine, acupuncture and herbology, as well as his state-of-the-art Western veterinary surgical skills.
While some would call this "alternative" medicine, Dr. Willauer encourages us to view these Chinese treatments in addition to and in conjunction with traditional Western medicine. Thus combined, this integrative healing draws on the best of both traditions - all for the health of your pet. Dr. Curtis currently practices out of our Central office only.
Spaying and Neutering
Spaying and neutering is recommended for all pets at or after 6 months of age. Spaying and neutering reduces or eliminates the risk for a number of highly fatal cancers, such as testicular and ovarian. Spaying will remove the nuisance of heat cycles in females, and will decrease male pets' aggressive tendencies and desire to roam. It can save untold amounts of money otherwise spent treating cancers or vaccinating and caring for litters of kitties and puppies.
Spaying or neutering your dog can also prevent problems such as straying and fighting, unplanned pregnancy, uterine or prostate infections and dystocia (difficulty with birthing). Best of all, it helps reduce Maui's pet overpopulation crisis!
Prevention & Wellness
Vaccines to prevent infectious diseases, heart-worm medication, and flea and tick control can help keep your pet from getting life-threatening diseases. Confining and controlling your pet's environment can also greatly reduce chances of trauma or toxin exposure.
Early treatment of disease is likely to be not only more effective but also less expensive. Very young, very old, debilitated pets, or pets with pre-existing health problems may be more likely to get very ill quickly. Multiple problems or indications of severe disease, (coma, weakness, seizures) may indicate that your pet needs to be seen on an emergency basis.
